Keep reading the tabs below to find out more about the Woolston area and all that is has to offer.
Woolston is a suburb of Southampton, Hampshire, located on the eastern bank of the River Itchen. It is bounded by the River Itchen, Sholing, Peartree Green, Itchen and Weston. The area has a strong maritime and aviation history, with the prototype Spitfire which first flew from Southampton Airport being produced at the Supermarine factory in Woolston. This was bombed in the Second World War with great loss of life to local workers.
Interestingly Woolston is believed to originate from Olafs tun, a fortified tun on the East bank of the River Itchen established by the Viking leader Olaf I of Norway in the 10th Century. There is a craft ale house of the same now located on Portsmouth Road.
The Itchen Bridge, built to replace the former chain ferry, known as the Floating Bridge or the Woolston Ferry that crossed the river at that point.
Opened in June 1977 with a toll in place to cover the construction costs, however this was paid off in 2016 but the toll remains much to the annoyance of unbeknown visitors to the area!

Woolston railway station is on the West Coastway Line, situated at the end of the Itchen Bridge and operated by South Western Railway. Typically one train an hour calls at Woolston in each direction, a stopping service run by South Western Railway between Southampton Central railway station and Portsmouth and Southsea railway station, with more services at peak times
There is a major bus stop on the Woolston link road (a separate entrance/exit to the Itchen Bridge not used by normal cars), with a number of (mostly First Hampshire & Dorset) buses running through the suburb.
There are many small local businesses in Woolston including a range of barbers, opticians’ hairdressers, charity shops and a plethora of takeaways. Lidl is the main large supermarket as well as a choice of small Co-Ops convenience stores.
There is also a gym, sports bar, and Mettricks coffee shop at the Centenary Quay Plaza.
